What grasses are best for North Florida?

Updated: Nov 12, 2020

There are basically 5 grasses available for North Florida.

1) Bahia Grass

The toughest and most durable is Bahia. It's also the most common in North Florida. It has a high resistant to disease and insects and grows fast. In the rainy summer months, it's super fast.

2) Bermuda Grass

The second most durable is Bermuda. It's often found on golf courses or city and county public areas. Requires very low maintenance due to it's deep root system.

3) Centipede Grass

For a nicer look, the most popular grass laid as sod is Centipede. It's carpet like and pretty easy to care for. On paper Centipede has a long list of diseases and pest that will attack it. In actually, only a handful ever do. However, it recovers well.

4) St. Augustine

Maybe the nicest looking sod to lay is St. Augustine. It stands up tall and likes to be watered. It has just a handful of diseases and pest that attack. But when they do you better catch it fast and act quick. St. Augustine grass doesn't recover very well. Basically requiring removal of the dead debris and replanting if you don't want to wait a year for a spot to grow in.

5) Zoysia

For that soft carpet look, Zoysia is your grass. It's super nice and kind of the new guy on the scene. Though it's been around a while, there aren't as many growers this grass in North Fl.

All of the grasses mentioned on our list can be made very nice if the proper water, fertilizer, and maintenance is given. If you need a hand, or just have questions, give us a call at 386-466-8269.
