Ok, it's officially winter in North fl. The past two nights it's dropped below freezing and we've woke to frost on the ground. So the question always comes up... Do I run my irrigation system during a freeze or not?
Some say that watering during a freeze will protect your plants from the cold. But what I've come to realize is that even if that's true, most people will not do this consistently through the winter. So let me caution you that running your system may actually cause damage if the proper precautions are not taken.
Freezing temperatures may cause damage to both plants and grass if there is not enough moisture in the ground. If the roots are dry damage will occur. We suggest that you water during the warmest part of the day. when the temps are at least above 35 degrees or more. This allows the plant/lawn material to absorb the moisture before the freeze.
Another overlooked issue is damage to the system itself. Freezing may actually break components of your irrigation system. You may desire to use something as simple as a freeze and rain sensor. These easy to install sensors will prevent the system from running during freezing temps. Once the temps rise, the system will turn back on. Also this helps with saving money when a system is due to run and is raining.
We install both Hunter and Rainbird freeze and rain sensors. Give us a call today to have yours installed and rest with ease during the next freeze or rain.
